Thank you to the 10,000 visitors who attended the 21st edition of photo l.a. and to the many new galleries from China, France, Germany and South Africa for making it one of our most successful fairs to date.
photo l.a. 2013 will continue hosting contemporary art galleries and traditional photography galleries, which presents an exciting mix of international stands and installations along with a rich programming series. Our well-attended lectures, panels and book signings, with notable leaders in the art and photography fields, provide a platform to address photography’s multiplicity and importance in the art market.
Michael Fried's panel, Why Photography Matters as Art as Never Before, and Collecting Photographs + Art: Public Collections addressed the issues surrounding photography’s standing in the art world today and its implications for collectors, curators and photographers alike.
Participants included: Walead Beshty, Charlotte Dumas, Dr. Charlotte Eyerman, Russell Ferguson, Scarlet Cheng, Eileen Cowin, Ken Gonzales-Day, Hunter Drohojowska-Philip, Manfred Heiting, Willie Middlebrook, Weston Naef, Catherine Opie, Charles Ray, Stephen Shore, Edward Robinson, Karen Sinsheimer, James Welling, Colin Westerbeck and Tim B. Steve Schapiro, Supermarket Protest, New Jersey, 1963
This year's edition was definitely re invigorated. There was a new look and feel to the fair, the staff was responsive to every request and provided "extra touches" that were very much appreciated. Attendance seemed to be up and sales were very strong (and follow-ups are already coming in today as I drive back!)

Siri Kaur, Alter Ego, Christopher, 2006
I would like to say, that as a multi-media gallery, I was very happy for the opportunity to highlight one of my photographers in a photo-focused fair and make connections within the photography community. Also, it meant the world to Siri to be featured in a longstanding photography fair.

We had intelligent enthusiastic visitors throughout the day, every day. I loved being in that French video.

Melanie Cleary, Piano Girl, 2010
photo l.a. 2012 offered me an opportunity to start my year with a true BANG! I have widened my pool of international collectors as well as solidified relationships with the international art community. photo l.a. is an art fair with a large international reach. It provided me with a platform to secure two major international exhibitions featuring South African photography later this year.
The effects of being part of photo l.a. 2012 was felt immediately. There has been a huge interest in all the photographers work which we had featured in our booth. And most importantly, we launched Melanie Cleary's photograph Piano Girl at photo l.a., it is now sold out!

Mitch Dobrowner, The Prophecies of William Blake, handmade fine press book with twelve platinum prints
photo l.a. has managed to not only keep standing since the great recession of 2008, but has refined itself and brought in fresh and exciting work from many new dealers who are a pleasure to be showing with in 2012.
I have to hand it to Stephen Cohen, Claudia Bartlett, Wayne Fernandez, and his entire team for running a show that brought in throngs of people. Friday had more traffic of any Friday show we have done in 14 years. Whatever this team did to get quality people to the show should be repeated.
The educational and lecture program was a nice addition, too, as it brought in lots of qualified people. photo l.a. was an upbeat, optimistic environment that needs to paid attention to by dealers and collectors across the globe. Los Angeles is a great market and Cohen and his team made it work!
